Earthsound is a unique project that showcases original improvised music and jazz alongside recorded environmental sounds. The music draws upon the sounds and styles of diverse composers such as Steve Reich, Duke Ellington, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Thelonious Monk, Maurice Ravel, and Igor Stravinsky. Improvised pieces performed over recorded soundscapes of natural settings complement the unique sound of the ensemble. Earthsound also explores the human and community impacts of climate change by setting to music spoken responses to climate change gathered through Climate Stories Project.
Bassist and leader of Earthsound Jason Davis began playing electric bass as a 13-year old in Lexington, MA. He became a serious devotee of jazz at Lexington High School, where he performed with the world-renowned LHS jazz combo and jazz greats such as Herb Pomeroy and Alan Dawson. Jason has won many awards for his playing, including the Clifford-Brown Stan Getz Fellowship from the National Association for Advancement of the Arts and many performance awards from Berklee College of Music.
Jason studied jazz bass with Bruce Gertz at Berklee College of Music, then obtained a Master's degree in classical bass performance from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. As a graduate student, he taught bass and ear-training to students at UMass, Mount Holyoke College, and Deerfield Academy. He also has an extensive background in environmental science and education, holds a Masters degree in ecology from the University of Florida, has done field research in Costa Rica, and worked as a ranger for the National Park Service. He is the founder and director of Climate Stories Project, an interactive forum for sharing personal and community responses to climate change.
Jason performs jazz, pop, classical, salsa, and world music with a very wide range of ensembles. Jason also has a deep love for Brazilian music, and has studied samba and choro in Rio de Janeiro. He currently performs around the world and teaches bass and guitar to many students in the Greater Boston area through his teaching studio, Boston Bass Lessons.
